Women’s Health Connecticut Stands with Top Physician Organizations Against Political Intervention in Care

Recently approved legislation modifying state laws around certain types of medical care and procedures has raised prominent conversation about federal access to treatment. Notably, a bill passed by the Alabama Senate holds physicians liable for conducting procedures that may result in felony jail time up to 99 years if convicted. Many of these laws are in the process of being challenged and none are currently in effect.

Last week, a statement was released by The Group of Six, a coalition of physician-focused organizations, to defend the physician-patient relationship. "Our organizations are firmly opposed to efforts in state legislatures across the United States that inappropriately interfere with the patient-physician relationship, unnecessarily regulate the evidence-based practice of medicine and, in some cases, even criminalize physicians who deliver safe, legal and necessary medical care," the groups detailed.

The physicians of Women’s Health Connecticut are members of and in support of the organizations contained within The Group of Six and their statement. We advocate patient-protected access to safe, medically informed care, without the risk of legal repercussions. Like the organizations, “we call on policymakers to partner with us to advance policies that protect the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship, expand access to timely, evidence-based health care, and eliminate health disparities in our nation.”
